MAIN CHARACTERS
Oliver Queen, a billionaire playboy turned hooded vigilante archer, who is based on the DC Comics Green Arrow. After surviving a shipwreck on an isolated island for five years, Oliver returns to his home city with a mission to right the wrongs of his father and save the city from the crime that has flourished in his absence. At first, he's considered a vigilante; however, to honor Tommy's memory, he decides not to kill anymore and becomes a hero of Starling City. In his costumed guise, he has alternately been called "The Hood", "The Vigilante", and "Arrow".
Dinah "Laurel" Lance, Oliver's former love interest. Laurel shares the same name as the DC Comics character Black Canary. In season 1, Laurel is a non-profit attorney who fights for the rights of the less fortunate but in season 2, starts off as an Assistant District Attorney. Laurel was initially fired at mid season due to her drug addiction; however, taking an unethical action, she blackmailed her superior to rehire her, implying the disintegration's of her morality.
John Diggle, Oliver's partner, bodyguard, and good friend. More perceptive than his tough exterior might suggest, John was the first person in Starling City to notice that Oliver is no longer the same man as he was 5 years ago before he got stranded on that island. John is a former member of the U.S Army's Special Forces, and works to have Oliver channel his abilities into helping others in the city, and not just taking down the wealthy, corrupt businessmen that worked with Oliver's father. The character was introduced in the DC Comics universe with Green Arrow (Vol. 5) #24.
Felicity Smoak, the IT girl at Queen Consolidated who becomes part of Oliver's vigilante team. A character by the same name has appeared in the comics, as Ronnie Raymond's step-mother who runs a software company. In the second season, she is promoted to Oliver's executive assistant at the company.
Roy Harper, a character based on the DC Comics character of the same name. A petty crook, Roy was befriended by Thea and becomes her boyfriend in addition to working for her at Oliver's nightclub. After being saved by the hooded vigilante, Roy is fascinated by him and inspired to be like his idol, imitating him by also wearing a hood himself of his red sweatshirt or jacket and tries to help others, eventually starting to work with him in season 2. Roy is injected with the same Mirakuru drug that was given to Slade during season 2, giving him super strength and regenerative healing factor but, unlike Slade, his sanity appears intact but causing his demeanor increasingly aggressive. He has trouble handling his new abilities and the volatility of his behavior, so Arrow decides to train him. He eventually learned Oliver's secret identity and joined his team.
Thea Queen, Oliver's troubled younger sister. Thea's recreational drug use is resolved by the end of Season One when she narrowly escapes being jailed for driving while under the influence. Her brother's occasional nickname for her is "Speedy", which was put into the script intentionally by the writers, along with her middle name of Dearden, as an easter egg connection to one of Green Arrow's sidekicks in the comics. In Season 2, she starts running Oliver's nightclub and is revealed to be Malcolm Merlyn's biological daughter.
